Have you ever said:
👉 我想一个苹果。 (Wǒ xiǎng yí ge píngguǒ。) – I want an apple.
It sounds natural, right? But… something’s not quite right! Can you guess the mistake?
The problem is with 想 (xiǎng).
Wrong sentence:
❌ 我想一个苹果。 Wǒ xiǎng yí ge píngguǒ。
Correct sentence:
✅ 我想要一个苹果。Wǒ xiǎngyào yí ge píngguǒ。 – I want an apple.
✅ 她想要一杯咖啡。Tā xiǎngyào yì bēi kāfēi。
👉🏼 She wants a cup of coffee.
✅ 他们想要一辆车。Tāmen xiǎngyào yí liàng chē。
👉🏼 They want a car.
Good question! Use 想 (xiǎng) when you’re talking about:
1. Thinking or considering doing something:
2. Expressing a wish or desire to do something:
3. Missing someone or something:
Can you fix the wrong sentences below?
1. ❌ 我想一个新手机。Wǒ xiǎng yí ge xīn shǒujī。
2. ❌ 他们想一辆车。Tāmen xiǎng yí liàng chē。
Correct answers:
1. ✅ 我想要一个新手机。Wǒ xiǎngyào yí ge xīn shǒujī。→ I want a new phone.
2. ✅ 他们想要一辆车。Tāmen xiǎngyào yí liàng chē。→ They want a car.
To sound more natural in Chinese, just remember:
👉 想 (xiǎng) + do something
👉 想要 (xiǎngyào) + a thing
