“Wait… don’t they both mean I don’t understand?”
Well… not quite! ❌
These two phrases are often confused by Chinese learners, but they mean different things — and using the wrong one can lead to awkward misunderstandings 😅
Let’s break them down step by step 👇
🔵 我不知道 (wǒ bù zhīdào) - “I don’t know”
You don’t have the knowledge or information
You’re not aware of something
Often used when you can’t answer a question
💡 Think of it like: “I don’t know the answer.”
🟢 我听不懂 (wǒ tīng bu dǒng) - “I don’t understand (what I heard)”
You heard what someone said, but didn’t understand it
It’s a listening comprehension problem
Often used when you didn’t catch or understand spoken Chinese
💡 Think of it like: “I can’t make sense of what you said.”
Example 1
A: 明天几点开会?
(Míngtiān jǐ diǎn kāihuì?)
→ What time is the meeting tomorrow?
🟢 B: 我不知道。
(Wǒ bù zhīdào.)
→ I don’t know.
✅ You don’t have the info.
Example 2
A: 你明天会去参加那个国际学术研讨会吗?
(Nǐ míngtiān huì qù cānjiā nàge guójì xuéshù yántǎohuì ma?)
→ Will you attend that international academic seminar tomorrow?
🟢 B: 我听不懂。
(Wǒ tīng bu dǒng.)
→ I didn’t understand what you said.
✅ You didn’t catch the long sentence or some vocab.
❌ Saying “我不知道” when someone is speaking too fast
✅ Say “我听不懂” — it shows you didn’t catch the meaning
❌ Saying “我听不懂” when asked a question you simply don’t know
✅ Say “我不知道” — it’s about lack of knowledge, not language
Choose the better phrase: 我不知道 (wǒ bù zhīdào) or 我听不懂 (wǒ tīng bu dǒng).
1.
Q: 你知道这个字是什么意思吗?
(Nǐ zhīdào zhè ge zì shì shénme yìsi ma?)
→ Do you know what this word means?
✅ Correct answer: 我不知道 (wǒ bù zhīdào)
👉 You’re being asked for a fact.
2.
Q: (Speaks a long, fast sentence in Chinese)
And you didn’t catch a thing.
✅ Correct answer: 我听不懂 (wǒ tīng bu dǒng)
👉 You couldn’t understand what was said.
Use 我听不懂 when you couldn’t understand spoken Chinese
👉 It’s about listening comprehension
🧏 Think of 我听不懂 as “My ears didn’t catch it.”
They’re both super useful — and once you get the difference, your Chinese will instantly sound more natural 💪
